What is AI Image Upscaler?

AI Image Upscaler enlarges an image to double or quadruple its resolution using Swin2SR, a super-resolution network — the same class of model the paid upscalers run on their servers, here running inside your own browser through WebAssembly. Unlike plain resizing, which can only stretch the pixels it has, a super-resolution model reconstructs plausible detail it learned from millions of photographs: edges come back sharp, textures come back textured, and JPEG-smudged areas are rebuilt rather than magnified.

Three models, honestly labelled

2× Fast is a lightweight network, the right default for most photos and the only sensible choice on a phone. 2× Quality is a larger model that resolves cleaner edges on graphics, text and screenshots, at several times the processing time. 4× Photo was trained on real-world degradation — sensor noise, compression, resampling — which makes it the one to pick for old photos, memes that have been reposted to death, and small pictures saved off the web.

Why the progress bar can be trusted

The image is processed in overlapping tiles, and the bar counts tiles actually finished — when it says 60%, six tenths of your image genuinely exists at the new resolution. The time estimate is measured from the tiles already done, not invented. Speed depends entirely on your device, because your device is doing the work; a laptop will finish a 2× pass on a 1-megapixel image in well under a minute, while a 4× pass on the same image takes noticeably longer.

The honest limits

A browser tab has a memory ceiling, so each model has an input cap — around 2 megapixels for the fast model, less for the heavier ones. Anything larger is reduced to the cap before the pass, and the page tells you when that happened rather than hiding it. A super-resolution model also cannot recover information that was never captured: it makes a small image look like a genuine larger photograph, it does not make a blurry face identifiable or turn a thumbnail into a poster. If your original is already large and sharp, an upscaler is the wrong tool — you likely want the compressor or the enhancer instead.
