Frequently Asked Questions

Lossless mode strips out redundant internal data — unused objects, duplicated fonts, bloated metadata — without touching a single visible element. Text stays selectable and searchable and images keep their original resolution, but the savings are modest. Image Compression mode downsamples and re-encodes the embedded images, which is where the dramatic reductions come from on scanned and photo-heavy documents.
It depends on size. Files under 2 MB are compressed entirely in your browser and never leave your device. Files over 2 MB are sent over an encrypted connection to our server, because the Ghostscript engine that handles them properly cannot run in a browser. Those uploads are processed in a temporary folder and deleted as soon as your download finishes — nothing is stored, archived or backed up.
Because it was already efficient. A text-only PDF exported from Word has very little to remove, so Lossless mode may only save a few percent. The big wins come from scanned documents and PDFs full of high-resolution photos, where the images are the bulk of the file and can be downsampled.
No. Text in a PDF is stored as font data, not as pixels, so it is never re-encoded by either mode and stays sharp and searchable at any compression level. Only embedded images lose quality. The exception is a scanned document, where the "text" is really a photograph of a page — compress those gently.
